Walk through Maulds Meaburn towards Meaburn Hall. After the cattle grid turn left over stile
and take the direction of Howebeck Bridge. Pass through the gap stile in the middle of the next wall
and head towards the bridge diagonally across the next field. Go over the stile next to the stream and onto
the road. Turn left and then travel for a short distance along the road until you reach a sharp
bend. As you go round the bend (no pun intended) you will see a sign pointing across a field to REAGILL.
Take this path by crossing a stile and then cross a small stream using a footbridge after crossing
another stile.
Now head across this field bearing right and heading for the corner of a wood. On reaching this
head across this field, ignoring the stile on your left, and on crossing the next stile head for the corner
of another wood crossing a dry section of a small stream. Follow the edge of the wood and go through a
waymarked gap stile. Now head uphill slightly keeping a barn on your left to reach a farm gate (waymarked)
and go through the gate on to a farm track that leads you to a farm building. Pass through the gate to the
right of the farm and follow the farm track until it reaches a narrow road leading into Reagill. A glance back
from this path will mean glorious views of the valley and beyond to the Pennines.
At the road turn right and after a short distance turn left at a road sign to Shap. On this small section look
over the walled fence to the right to see the renovated Image Gardens created by Thomas Bland, which used
to be opened to the public once a year starting in June 1837 on the anniversary of the day Queen Victoria came to
the throne. Some of the statues in here are over 150 years old.
After the gardens turn right on to the Sleagill road and walk through the village. Just outside the village walk on
until you reach a derelict barn on your right. Here take a bridleway to Threaplands to the left. Cross straight
across the first field to pass through another gate and then bear slightly left to pass through more fields and
gates, some of which are waymarked, heading towards Threaplands farm buildings. At the farm go through two more
gates close to each other and follow the waymarker on to a farm track. Turn left and follow the track. From this
track there are fabulous views - to the right the Lakeland hills and to the left the Pennines. This track eventually
leads to another minor road.
Turn right and then shortly after left to go along the edge of a wood. At the end of the wood turn left at a public
Bridleway sign to walk through the edge of the wood. At the end of the wood go through a small gate into a field
and shortly afterwards through another small gate to follow the fence on your left through another field running
parallel to another wood. Head straight on to the corner of a small copse where you will find a gate into the copse.
Go through the copse to emerge through yet another small gate to meet a farm track by some farm buildings. Turn right
on to this track and follow it through more farm gates until it reaches the bend in the road where you can turn right
to find Howbeck Bridge and return to Maulds Meaburn.
