Butchers Arms

The Butchers Arms - Crosby Ravensworth

The Maulds Meaburn local?
The pub is named after the Duke of Gloucester (later Richard III) a bit of a local hero. Whether it was because of his prowess in battle or perhaps because of his reputed involvement with the murder of his nephews in the Tower - I don't know.
Guest beers every week. and the pub is in the Real Ale Guide.
There is a beer garden to the rear and kids eat free Tue - Fri with a full paying adult.
They now offer accommodation and have 1 double, 1 family, and 1 twin room available.
The owners are Colin & Sue Wilson, who have previously run pubs in Yorkshire and Alston.

The New Inn The New Inn - Hoff

On the Orton to Appleby road about 2 miles from Appleby.
The pub closed in early 2001 but re-opened at Christmas 2001 under new ownership. The pub always stocks four cask ales and is establishing a reputation for good food and beer.

Unfortunately I see that the pub is For Sale and appears closed - Nov 2008

The three greyhounds The Three Greyhounds - Great Asby

Nice pub in a beautiful, peaceful village. Beers include John Smiths, Jennings, Bombadier bitter, 1664, Fosters Lager and a couple of ales. Good food at reasonable prices - try the home made steak pie or when we were there crab cakes were on the "specials" board.

I have heard rumours that the pub is closed but cannot confirm this -check its website.

The Shepherds Inn The Village Bakery The Shepherds Inn - Melmerby

About 12 miles from Maulds Meaburn. It has recently been re-opened (June 2009) after a six month closure and is now linked with the famous Hesket Newmarket Brewery. It will have six of their beers on at any one time.
The pub has an excellent reputation for its food.

With food in mind you will also find in Melmerby the excellent "Village Bakery". It specialises in organic foods and serves food in its cafe as well as its shop. With the meal you can have organic wines, beers or cider. On a fine day you can sit in the garden and admire the beautiful village and its surroundings.

The Queens Head The Queens Head - Tirril (National Pub of the Year 2003)

About 12 miles from Maulds Meaburn. The pub used to have its own local beers (Tirril Brewery) but was been sold to a chain in 2007.

The older part of the pub has original flagstones, low wooden beams, high backed settles and an inglenook fireplace.

It has undergone some refurbishment and still seems a popular pub for dining and drinking.

The Bar The Fire

The Black Swan The Black Swan - Culgaith

About 12 miles from Maulds Meaburn, on the road to Melmerby from MM. The pub is well run with a very pleasant landlord. Tetley beer well kept and good bar food. Very popular for a Sunday lunch and a real fire pub.

The Horse & Farrier The Horse & Farrier - Dacre

About 16 miles from Maulds Meaburn. Well kept Black Sheep Ale as well as draft Guinness, Stella etc. We had Scampi and chips - fairly standard, but the baguettes looked good, with a wide range of fillings.
Friendly staff and a quaint village. This report was made a few years ago and I have had an e-mail from the current owners stating that the pub is about to be refurbished and many improvements will be made for this summer. (2007)

Punch Bowl
The Bar
The Punch Bowl - Askham

Just over 12 miles from Maulds Meaburn, on the road towards Tirril, signposted off to the left. There are two pubs in the village, the other being another Queen's Head. I prefer the Punch Bowl. It is an excellent pub for sitting outside in warm weather with a good view of the beautiful, peaceful village of Askham. A good range of beers - I had an excellent pint of Cracker ale (Ambleside Brewery) this Easter, when the photographs were taken

Beers include :- Guinness; Black Sheep Ale; Boddingtons;Stella etc.

The pub has a good reputation for food and is very popular - especially in summer. The seating area to the right of the picture has now been covered.

Crown & Mitre The Crown & Mitre - Bampton Grange

Turn off the A6 at Shap heading towards Haweswater. This small pub is in an equally small but extremely picturesque village. Sit outside on a summer evening listening to the birds sing and the chiming of the clock tower of St Patricks church opposite - wonderful.A former coaching inn which has had a new landlord since October 2002 and is a popular stopping off point on the coast to coast walk.
Plenty of good walks in the area. We went on a good 6 mile circular walk from the pub to Haweswater - back in time for opening at 5 o' clock.(Walk from "Best pub walks in the Lakeland fringes - Neil Coates")

Beers include :- Abbot Ale; Boddingtons; Stella etc..

The George & Dragon The George & Dragon - Garrigill

About 5 miles from Alston. Amazing little gem with stone flagged floor and good range of real ales and plenty of room to sit outside on the village green. The pub is in a village that is well off the beaten track unless you are on foot in which case it is on the Pennine Way.
We had a fine pint of Waggledance along with a number of Pennine Way walkers.

Taken over by Mark & Pauline Berry at the end of 2003. The new owners are striving to establish the pub in the area. It is in an ideal spot, overlooking the very pleasant village green. It is a good starting point for a circular walk along the banks of the River Eden.

The Cross Keys The Cross Keys - Tebay.

The Rose and Crown The Rose & Crown - Romaldkirk.
About a 50min drive from Maulds Meaburn.

A little distance from Maulds Meaburn but worth the drive especially if the A66 is avoided and you drive the "back way" through Brough. The food here is really excellent, and inside this traditional pub is well decorated and has a friendly atmosphere. Beers include Theakstons, Black Sheep, Guinness and John Smiths. A real coal fire in the bar area.

The village itself is beautiful and a good centre for some excellent walks. If you find the Rose & Crown too busy nip down the road to Cotherstone and visit the Fox & Hounds - another little gem!
