Appleby-in-Westmorland is about 5 miles from Maulds Meaburn and is a very popular village with tourists.
The town lies in a loop in the River Eden. The main street of Boroughgate connects the Norman Motte & Bailey Castle to the market square and High and Low Cross. The 12th. century parish church of St.Lawrence contains the tomb of Lady Anne Clifford who was responsible for the restoration of many castles in the area as well as founding St. Anne's hospital - a peaceful courtyard of almshouses.
